Journey South founder Kate Lawry has a love of travel that she has passed on to all of her clients over the years, empathizing and understanding their needs, and having deep connections to Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific.
Kate has 30 years’ experience in the industry, having stepped into it on leaving school, and never leaving it since.
Many years spent building itineraries in the United Kingdom and the United States for people heading “down under” meant she developed a deep understanding of what people expect when they want to embark on a personalized, luxury vacation to this far part of the world.
She established Journey South on moving to New Zealand herself several years ago. Her one-on-one contact with operators throughout New Zealand and Australia means she has up to date, first-hand knowledge of new attractions and experiences luxury travelers to these countries are seeking.
Kate understands travel is a deeply personal experience, as varied as the clients she looks after- she goes to great effort to provide her clients with personalized itineraries that match their travel desires.
No request, from swimming with sharks in South Australia to catching crayfish for lunch on a remote New Zealand beach, is considered impossible.
Kate knows the true value of travel is best captured in the John Steinbeck quote:
“People don’t take trips, trips take people”
Her pleasure is seeing her clients’ pleasure on returning from a trip full of new experiences, faces and landscapes.
Jo Bird spent a couple of years in her twenties traveling and working in Australia before moving her family from the UK to settle in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand.
With a passion for Napier, rebuilt after the 1931 earthquake in the Art Deco Style of the time, you'll find her dressed in the style of the era dancing in the streets to Big Band Jazz along with visitors from all over the world each year drawn to the towns Art Deco week.
She spends her weekends either off the beaten track with her son fishing for trout in one of the beautiful Hawkes Bay Rivers or pedaling along the many cycle tracks in Hawkes Bay heading out to one of the wonderful wineries for lunch.
Her favorite place in New Zealand is the Abel Tasman National Park, a wilderness reserve at the north end of the South Island with its walking trail winding through Native forest winding over ridges and unspoilt golden beaches. Kayak along its turquoise waters to see fur sea colonies, little blue penguins and bottle nose dolphins. In Australia, her most memorable trip was to the Northern Territory.
